A Quick Guide to Popular Candy

There are tons of candy choices on the market, so how do we define popular candy? Obviously, we can use total sales of each candy to determine which treats are the most popular.

Chocolate is probably at the top of most peoples' popular candy list. Everybody, it seems, is an aficionado of one or the other of the seemingly endless types and brands of candy bars.

The most popular candy bar by sales is the Snickers bar, which is produced and marketed by Mars Inc. It was invented in 1930, with chewy nougat, caramel and peanuts, all topped by milk chocolate. The bar was named after one of the horses owned by the Mars family in Great Britain. It actually sells as the Marathon bar in England.

Hershey bars are also normally ranked in the top five or ten of candy bars, by sales. They have different varieties, which are tracked separately, such as Hershey's, Hershey's with Almonds, Hershey's Special Dark, and other types.

Another popular candy in the chocolate category is the Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. Since they have developed holiday specialty bars like Christmas trees and Easter egg shapes, they have garnered more of the market share in chocolate sales.

All popular candy isn't chocolate, though – there are many other types of candies that people can't get enough of. One of these is Jujyfruits, which used to be a theater mainstay box candy, but which is now available in drug and discount stores in the same box, for about one-quarter to one-third the cost as a theater concession stand charges. Good and Fruity and Good and Plenty are old time favorites that some people still look for – they are generally a bit harder to find nowadays.

You can't have a popular candy list without including “Peeps”, which were originally yellow chicks, but can now be found as snowmen, eggs, bunnies and heart shapes, depending on the season. This treat may be the closest to 100% sugar that there is – but it's a perennial favorite. Some people like to cut a slice in the package and wait to eat them til they're hard.

Jolly Ranchers are popular for those who like hard candy, that you can pop in your mouth and suck on until it's small enough to chew. Werther's caramel candies are another popular hard candy that's hard to stop eating, once you start. Werther's now come in a chocolate covered variety too, and they're sure to be a favorite.

Gummie bears and gummie worms are still a popular candy, and nowadays there seems to be a plethora of sour gummies and other sour candies that the youngsters enjoy a lot. Nerds and Spree and Sweet-tarts are still popular candies as well.

If there's a flavor you like, someone has probably already made it into a popular candy. You just have to look for it.
